WOOBURN NARROWLY MISS OUT ON DESERVED TRIUMPH

Wooburn Narkovians 2nds dominated their match with leaders Fleet 2nds, narrowly failing to secure a well deserved victory.

Asked to bat first, Wooburn's openers Dave Rogers and Alan Cuthbert got the innings off to an excellent start in bowler friendly conditions. Cuthbert was in fine form until he was bowled off his pads for 21. Tab Nawaz then joined Rogers in an entertaining stand of 92 for the second wicket, before he holed out to long off for 51.

Stuart Savage helped to maintain the momentum, hitting one huge six in his brief 20. Savage's dismissal sparked a mini-collapse, with a tiring Rogers eventually falling for 74, and Jason Degelas going for 0. This allowed Dugay to bring some control to the Fleet bowling, and the spinner varied his pace well while Richard Barker and John Saunders established themselves. Fleet's respite was brief. Saunders went on the attack, hitting two sixes in his 15, then Barker took over. He timed the ball superbly, hitting five fours and two sixes in his whirlwind 43. Tim Waxman supported him well at the end with an unbeaten 14. Fleet left the field totally demoralised, facing a total of 254-7.

Fleet's reply began brightly, with Talbot taking 9 off Waxman's first over. He then survived a sharp slip catch off Day, before edging Waxman to Savage behind the stumps. Waxman had now found his rhythm, and Lent struggled to keep the Wooburn paceman out. Meanwhile, at the other end, Gurney was content to put his front foot down and meet everything with a dead bat.

Clearly Fleet had no intention of making the slightest effort of scoring the runs, and it was down to Wooburn's bowlers to force the issue. Waxman, now bowling superbly, made the next breakthrough, Lent giving Savage his second catch. Day then prised out Gurney, Savage taking the catch once again. Scott soon followed, when Waxman got one through his defences. Fleet were 30-4 after 18 overs and facing a long struggle for survival.

Fleet's captain, Winter, resisted well, but Degelas removed Lee with a short ball that the batsman played onto his stumps. This was Wooburn's last success for a while, Winter and Savage defending stoutly. Wooburn turned to the spin of Rob Rogers, but he posed few problems until Winter swept straight to Dave Rogers who picked up a smart catch. Palmer came in next, and showed sound technique until Rogers tempted him with a well-flighted ball, Waxman taking the catch at slip. The overs were now beginning to run out as Wooburn, with 10 men round the bat, chased victory.

Barker replaced Rogers, and bowled with good pace. After one or two good lbw shouts, he had one upheld against Lent. Wooburn now had eight overs to take the last two wickets. The new batsman, Dugay, decided attack was the best form of defence and went for his shots. This appeared to be Wooburn's best chance and, after striking some good boundaries, he offered a difficult return catch. The chance went down, and Wooburn's hopes went with it. Savage played out the last over, leaving Fleet on 126-8 at the end.
