Barker Bashes Superb Ton
Wooburn travelled to Wraysbury in this rearranged Sunday fixture with a side with a good mixture of youth and experience. Wraysbury’s side appeared to have a similar mix of players, including a few 1st team players who had recently celebrated promotion back to the Premier Division of the Chiltern League.
Stand-in skipper Matt Curtis won the toss and chose to bat on what looked like an excellent wicket. Opener Jon Nelson and Mani Sharma started solidly, before Mani played around a straight one and was bowled by Kibble. Chris Hall then came in and looked to play positively and the 50 came up in good time in the 13th over. However, it was clearly a good wicket and 200 plus would be needed, and Chris perished for 20 looking to drive and skying a catch to point.
Dave Small came in at 4 with high expectations on a track that should have suited his powerful hitting. Inadvisably he tried to turn an unplayable first ball into the leg-side and got a high leading edge that the square leg fielder took comfortably despite a yelp of anguish from a distraught Smally. This gave opening bowler Davies a deserved wicket from a good opening spell.
Ritchie Barker came to the crease with Wooburn’s innings in the balance at 60-3. But Ritchie looked in no mood to pass up the opportunity for a big score as he began scoring quickly all around the wicket, dealing mainly in boundaries on the quick outfield. With the quick singles also being run, the scoring rate was increasing and soon the hundred came up, followed by Jon Nelson’s 50. Ritchie soon raced to his own 50 with a couple of exquisite cover drives and superbly timed front foot drives through midwicket. Jon Nelson also accelerated with a number of boundaries from his favourite pull shot and the bowlers were beginning to get ragged, with captain Chohan being particularly punished and finishing with 4 overs for 53.
As the score passed 200 Kibble returned to bowl a couple of tight overs and get the breakthrough in the 33rd over. With Jon approaching a maiden ton for Wooburn he unfortunately tickled one down the leg side and the keeper Gunewardena took an excellent catch standing-up to dismiss him for 87, and end the partnership on 147. Matt Curtis was soon run-out looking for quick runs at the end of the innings, and it was down to Rob Hall to try and take Wooburn up to 250. Opening bowler Yasin was left in no doubt about Rob’s ability to manage to short bowl and as hooked him for 4 with one of the shots of the day. With Ritchie approaching his century Rob rotated the strike well, and in the 39th over Ritchie moved to 99 with a huge straight 6, and then ran a quick single to complete a well-deserved century. Wooburn ended on 250-6 with Ritchie unbeaten on 107.

A good tea was had by all, described later as the ‘tea of the decade’ by George Taylor, who managed to get involved despite not actually playing.

With plenty of runs on the board Wooburn looked to attack and the first couple of overs by Matt Payne and Dave Small were very tight, until Chohan decided to attack and hit some boundaries. Matt then had him caught in the gully, only for it to be called a no-ball. This reprieve looked to be costly as Chohan then struck Smally for a fortunate 17 in an over, which included a very difficult dropped return catch. Matt Payne was then driven over cover for 6, but got his revenge with an exact replay of the no-ball wicket with Jon Nelson taking a stinging catch in the gully. Wraysbury continued to score at good rate, but Dibley managed to pick out Jon Nelson again in the covers to give James Dolan a wicket, and he soon picked up his 2nd to leave Wraysbury 84-3. But Wraysbury continued to attack Wooburn’s young bowler in what was a good experience for them, and at one stage were 132-3 in the 19th over. It was Phil Sears who made the breakthrough by having Butt wonderfully caught by Manny at point. Phil produced an interesting debut spelling of bowling littered with a number of good balls, and a number of unintentional beamers. However, the danger man January was still in and had already reached a rapid 50 with a number of sixes. The captain turned to Ritchie Barker who then removed January with his third ball, caught behind with Chris Hall taking a low catch, and then picked up another wicket in the same over. Phil Sears then picked up his second wicket to leave Wraysbury reeling at 137-6 and soon after Rob Hall had Wain caught in the gully by Nelson with his third catch.
However, a 50 run 8th wicket partnership between Ibrahim and Kibbel reignited the game and Wraysbury only needed 40 runs with plenty of overs to spare. There was still time for Smally to produce some magic as he dived full length to his right at midwicket, only for the rapidly travelling ball to not stick, but it did not prove costly as specialist fielder Mani produced a stunning run-out with a direct hit from point. Unsurprisingly it was Ritchie Barker who had the last say during the bowling of the returning James Briggs, with another run-out to add to his century, two wickets and two catches, and complete the victory for Wooburn in the gloom by 34 runs.
Overall this was an excellent game of cricket and the fixture is to repeated again next year. The hospitality by Wraysbury was completed with a invitation to their local members club to enjoy Ritchie’s jug and Smally’s misery.
