Hide Report
Wooburn Narkovians 2nd XI completed a hard earned victory over a youthful Maidenhead & Bray 3rd XI with just 15 balls to spare. A stubborn half century by Brooks had looked like saving Bray from defeat, but Wooburn’s patience was rewarded when Graham Dare returned to take the last two wickets and give Wooburn a deserved win.

In very hot conditions, Wooburn were put into bat on a dry wicket of variable pace and bounce. Wooburn soon lost stand-in skpper Angus Porter, but Derek Milsom (38) and Alan Cuthbert (55) patiently built a stand of 96 for the second wicket to put Wooburn in control. This was followed by a partnership of 71 between Rob Smith (20) and Dave Jordan (46), Jordan producing the most fluent batting of the match, striking four sixes in an impressive innings. Graham Milsom and Graham Dare then helped push the total passed 200, before the declaration came at 206-7 after 49 overs. Botha impressed for the home team, taking 4-18, despite being curiously under bowled.

Wooburn’s challenging declaration had given the home team a chance, but this soon disappeared when the top order collapsed against the slow bowling of Rob Rogers and Pete Harper. A combination of curious shot selection and excellent catching left Bray reeling on 16-4, but thereafter Wooburn faced stiffer resistance. With the batsmen now content to occupy the crease, Wooburn had to be patient and take their chances when they came.

Wahleed Hussain and Jordan picked up important wickets, but with the overs running out, Wooburn turned to Graham Dare. In his first over, Bowler drove straight to Jordan at short cover, then when it seemed Bray might escape with a draw, last man Wykes was bowled off the inside edge.

Rogers bowled with great control, producing the best figures of the day with 5-34, but all the bowlers played their part, backed up by some excellent work in the field. This win sees the Narks move back into 2nd place in Division 6A.
