2nds finish 7 runs short in thriller
The 2nd XI, chasing 256 for victory, finished just 7 runs short in a thrilling game against Gerrards Cross 3rds. The draw however, leaves us third going into the final match against rivals Teddington Town, but just three points behind both Teddington and Chiswick.

This game began with Cross being put in. The pitch looked good and the outfield was like glass. The Narks had the perfect start when Thorne shouldered arms to a straight ball from Ben Sturgess. A partnership of 39 followed, before the other opener, Blanchot, also went for a duck.

Hills was in impressive form, taking the attack to Phil Clarke, and driving the seamers fluently. J.Hughes helped him add a useful 48 for the third wicket before Rob Smith, making a rare appearance, bowled him. Graham Dare now got into the act. Bowling with admirable control in such batsman friendly conditions, his accuracy pegged back the Cross batsmen, even Hills momentarily becalmed.

Gerrards Cross slipped to 112-5, before S.Hughes played well for 32, and former 2nd XI captain Ralphs also chipped in with 32. A big score now looked likely, but Dare snapped up Ralphs and Hughes in quick succession, Hills having completed a fine hundred. A collapse left the home side on 236-9, but a final flurry took them up to a challenging 255 all out.

The Wooburn reply had the worst possible start when Angus Porter was caught a square leg for nought, but Alan Cuthbert (31) and Richard Harman began to put the innings back on track with a stand of 57 for the second wicket. Chris Hall also fell to Hughes' wily off-spinners. This was the cue for Richard to launch an assualt on the bowling, and after passing 50, he hammered 18 from 4 balls, but then sadly smashed the fifth high into the sky, Ralphs taking a good catch.

Rob Smith soon followed, before another partnership between Sav and Graham Dare had the home side worried. These two managed to keep up with the 6 an over asking rate, using all their experience to keep the momentum going. Sav was stangely out of sorts, but he kept going, and the trademark bottom hand proved very effective.

Hughes continued to bowl well, and his persistence eventually accounted for Graham, after a brave effort. The pair had added 82 for the sixth wicket in 17 overs, and hauled the Narks back into the game. Now much rested on Sav, and he managed to keep the score moving, the equation coming down to 25 from the last 4 overs.

Francis, Cross' opening bowler, now bowled a good over, only two coming from it. 23 runs from 3 overs. With the pressure mounting, Sav went for the big one, only to be caught on the long on boundary. The chance was almost gone. 20 from the last two, was too much for the tail, and despite some brave blows from Ben Sturgess and Phil Clarke, we finished just short.

Makes it nice and interesting for Teddington Town's visit to Wooburn Park next week.
