16/07/2008 YOUNG NARKS ARE COUNTY RUNNERS UP

Semi Final report

Wooburn Narks U15 qualified for the County finals with an impressive 37 runs victory over Ley Hill at Wooburn Park on Saturday 12th July.

Batting first on a difficult damp wicket, Wooburn were quickly in trouble losing the crucial early wickets of Sam Tomkins, Rob Furlong and Jack Fleck. A sensible partnership between Angus Lees (18) and Andy Grable (14) however revived the home team’s fortunes but a further cluster of wickets fell, leaving the home side bowled out for what looked like a beatable score of 72.

Not for the first time this season, the Narks really produced the goods when they were up against it and some superb bowling and tigerish fielding meant that the Ley Hill side were always struggling. Angus Lees bowled superbly to take 3-12 in his 4 overs and leave Ley Hill teetering at 24-7. This bowling was superbly backed up by James Dolan, Sam Tomkins and Rob Hall, all of whom conceded only 5 runs in their allotted 4 overs.

Ley Hill were unable to recover and were bowled out for 35 in the penultimate over resulting in the Narks 10th consecutive league win of the season.

Final report

The Wooburn Narks U15 narrowly failed to become Bucks County Champions when they lost to Chesham U15 in the County finals day staged at the scenic surroundings of Stowe School on Sunday 13th July.

The Narks entered the game in positive fashion having seen off Ley Hill in a delayed semi final the previous day and were the only side in the four conference leagues to achieve a 100% win record.

Put into bat on a damp green wicket, the young Narks struggled to come to terms with some accurate Chesham bowling and found themselves in all sorts of trouble at 14-3. Useful knocks from Andy Grable (25) and Charlie Ashford (23n.o.) saw a brief revival which resulted in the Narks ending with a respectable, albeit slightly disappointing, total of 85-9 in their allotted 20 overs.

In response, the young Narks hopes were briefly raised when Sam Tomkins took an early wicket and some tight Narks bowling ensured that the Chesham batsmen had to fight for every run. Despite taking a further wicket however, some very mature batting by the Chesham side saw their team home with 8 wickets and 2 overs to spare and lift the winners trophy.

After the match, medals were presented to each of the players and the Narks received a cheque of £100 from the Bucks CB towards further youth development. A fitting end to an excellent league season.
