75th Anniversary Dinner
|
A fantastic evening was had by over 150 attendees at the cricket club 75th anniversary dinner last Saturday at the Crowne Plaza in Marlow. The main entertainment was provided by speaker Geoff Miller, chairman of the England selectors, who recounted many hilarious tales from his days as a county and England player.
The night’s award winners were:
Townsend clubman award – Derek Milsom
1st XI player – Mark Tennant
2nd XI player – Neil Martin
Tenny boys award – Ellis Bowerman
A host of current and past players also contributed to a silent auction, raffle and other fundraising entertainment which resulted in an incredible £5000 being raised which will be used for the imminent pavilion refurbishment.
A pleasure to see so many players from the past 25+ years who helped make it a really great night of celebration for the club. Many thanks to all those who organised and helped run the evening and let’s hope for a similar turn out for the next big event – the refurbished Pavilion opening in April 2012.

Pavilion Refurbishment Gets the Green Light!
|
Wooburn Parish Council has this week given the go-ahead for the refurbishment of the pavilion, and work will hopefully commence at the end of October, and be complete in good time for the 2012 season.
The key benefits to the club are:-
1. A bar area about 30% bigger than at present
2. Better showers
3. Storage attached to the rear of the pavilion, sufficient both for groundsman's equipment and all the things which currently take up space in the pavilion (nets, bowling machine, scoreboard, chairs, benches....)
4. A ladies' loo inside the building rather than "out back"
5. A pitched roof - bad for vandals, but much better to look at, and a great location for a satellite dish!
6. New (electronic!) roller shutters covering all doors and windows.
7. New doors and windows throughout.
If anyone would like one of the old grills as a souvenir, please let me know!
It's been a long slog, but we've got there in time to ensure the 75th Dinner can be an extra special celebration!
Thanks to everyone who has stuck with it and contributed....

Junior Awards and end of season BBQ
|
Despite the torrential rain we had a fantastic turn out of more than 100 juniors and parents for the end of season BBQ and awards last Sunday morning. Everyone squeezed into the bar and on the veranda with chefs Kevin Dolan and Rob Hall doing a great job whilst cooking under cover.
The award winners were:
Chris Abbott Trophy (Colt of the year) – William Cuthbert
Senior Colt – Liam Davies
Junior Colt – Oli Lawrie
Kirby Shield – Max Wilkinson
U15 Batting – Andy Preston
U15 Bowling – Matthew Hewlett
U13 Batting – Ali Dalton
U13 Bowling – Liam Davies
U12 Batting – John Henry Kelly
U12 Bowling – Ciaran Kempster
U11 Batting – Daniel Ellis
U11 Bowling – Matthew O’Regan
U10 Batting – James Houghton
U10 Bowling – Ben Cooper
It has been another good year for the junior section with an increase in membership to just over 90 which puts us on track for the magic 100 mark for next season. Hopefully the 2012 season should see a refurbished pavilion as well as the prospect of some of these youngsters starting to appear in senior teams.

The GREAT Escape
|
Wooburn had a fantastic final league weekend of the 2011 season with the 1st team pulling off a remarkable escape from relegation by the slimmest possible margin and the 2nd team securing their status in Division 7b with a commanding performance over Datchet.
The 1st team overcame champions British Airways with a 30 run victory against all the odds and results elsewhere meant the unfortunate Kew (16 points of clear at the start of the day) were relegated despite finishing on the same number of points than Wooburn due to the fact that Wooburn won 1 more game than Kew during the season.
A disappointing season overall for both teams but a fantastic final achievement when it mattered most.

10k run 11th September - help needed
|
The annual 10k run is taking place in the park on Sunday September 11th, and has taken on additional significance for the cricket club because this year, the proceeds are going towards the pavilion refurbishment project.
We need a LOT of helpers on the day, the areas where we need help are not burdensome:
1. We need people prepared to be positioned on the course during the run, to point runners in the right direction (a great way of being directly involved in the run, without actually expending energy!)
2. We need one young or fit volunteer to act as the "hare" for the shorter 3k run, which takes place within the park (and don't worry about being overtaken - the hare gets a good start!)
3. We need a number of helpers to man desks for late entries, serve tea and coffee, etc.
4. We need contributions for our cake stall.
If you (and your other halves, kids, parents, friends) can help with one or more of these, could you please let Angus, Derek or Phil know ASAP?
Many thanks!
Angus

U10 Kwik Cricket 6 aside Tournament
|
Chesham 1 were the winners of the kwik cricket tournament held yesterday at the ground. 10 teams played through the rain to complete the games and what was a highly enjoyable morning for all, although maybe a bit damp at times.
There were 2 group of 5 teams comprising, Taplow, Winchmore Hill, Chesham 2, Penn Street, Allstars, Chesham 1, Chalfont St Peter, Wooburn, Penn & Tylers and Knotty Green. Group 1 was won by Chesham 1 with the runners up being Penn & Tylers who were part of a 3 way tie only decided by the fact that they had scored 5 more runs than Knotty Green.
In group 2 Winchmore Hill won all of their matches with Taplow coming runners up. The semi finals ended up in wins for Chesham A and Winchmore Hill with Chesham then winning the final to emerge as champions. A big thankyou to all players, supporters, umpires and helpers on a challenging but ultimately successful morning. Roll on 2012 ??

|
Sunday 26th June - Old Narks Day
|
We have had a great response and are expecting a great turn-out of around 120 current and Old Narks.
It should prove to be a great day and it's not to late to book your place, so please let Derek know asap (derekmilsom@aol.com) if you are thinking of coming along, especially if you intend to play.
Actually, there is a bit of a twist to the cricket, but more about that later.
We do not intend to clock-watch, but this is a general idea of the timing:
12.00 noon - BBQ
1.00pm - Bucks Free Press photographer expected
1.30pm - Cricket
From about 4.00pm - Tea
4.30pm - More Cricket
7.00-7.30pm - Presentation of trophies
There will be three marquees, so there should be plenty of room available and the free bouncy castle should help keep the younger ones occupied.
Parking:
Drive through the gate and follow the signs - please drive slowly - you can park anywhere on or near the boundary edge (perhaps avoiding cow-corner!), but please note we have reserved an area next to the pavilion for disabled badge holders.
With the car close, we suggest bringing a chair or sun lounger (sun has been ordered!) to watch the cricket.
BBQ
£5 each, £3 under 16 and free for the little ones under 6 (then to the bouncy castle!)
Chicken, Hot Dog and Beef Burger plus salad!
Tea:
Same prices as the BBQ and will be exceptional value. All the usual Wooburn tea options plus a glass of Bucks Fizz!
There will also be a vegetarian and gluten free option available at both the BBQ and tea.
Bar will be open all day and will also serve tea and coffee.
Picnic:
Please feel free to bring your own picnic.
Cricket:
Match Fee: £5 (£3 for colts/students)
In keeping with the spirit of Narkover College and our founding members, £2 of the match fee will form a voluntary donation to Cancer Research UK.
There will also be an opportunity for spectators to donate.
Oh yes, the format:
There will be four teams and for those of you that love something a little novel, a new format has been designed and approved by the ECB (well perhaps the PCA, anyway) and is being road-tested at Wooburn!
We won't spoil the fun by giving too much away (don't worry, it's still cricket!), but will all players please be available for the 1.30 start (except those who have already informed us of a slightly later arrival).
By the way, if you are arriving later in the day, it should still be possible for you to take part.
See you Sunday.
